Revising the 10 commandments

Here's a very interesting proposal I found. If we atheist were to have 10 commandments just as Catholics do, the list may be something like this:

1. Atheism
Try to Treat others as you would want to have them treat you.
1. Catholic
I am the Lord thy God. Thou shalt not have strange gods before me.

2. Atheism
Be Truthful and honest even if inconvenient or uncomfortable.
2. Catholic
Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain.

3. Atheism
Treat the environment and all life with reverence ensuring it's improvement by virtue of preventing loss, injury or any other harmful change.
3. Catholic
Remember thou keep the Sabbath Day.

4. Atheism
Determine what is moral in your own mind, not what others dictate morality should be.
4. Catholic
Honor thy Father and thy Mother.

5. Atheism
Never feel absolutely certain of anything and question everything, be they bibles, history or science books.
5. Catholic
Thou shalt not kill.

6. Atheism
Never discourage expression of free thought, regardless of the subject matter or personal opinion.
6. Catholic
Thou shalt not commit adultery.

7. Atheism
Aggressively prohibit oppressive authority in defense that all people are born free and equal in dignity and rights without distinction of any kind.

I'm a person who thinks that the English language is kind of messed up. I mean, there are words that you can write using exactly the same syntax, and they mean different things. There are also words that sound similar, but have different meanings, and there are also words that sound exactly the same but not only they have different meanings, but they also don't have even one letter in common.

That's all comparing it to the Spanish language, where you have so many words...you have four and five different words to say something....well that's also messed up...I guess.

Anyway, today I received an email, with a nine letter word in English, which you can start removing words one by one from, and every time you remove a letter, the remaining letters make a valid word in English. The word is:

Now it's easier to search for videos @ Google and YouTube

In a previous post I talked about my almost inexistent tv watching habits. Somethings have changed since then. First, a friend of mine upgraded her TIVO box and gave us (my and my wife) her old one.

I've always been a fan of TV on demand. I think that you should watch what you want, and not what TV producers want you to. Now with TIVO, I can specify the kind of programs I like, and when I get home (or when I have time to sit in front of the TV), I can review the recordings that were made while I was out. It's really cool.

Anyway, that's one thing that has changed. The other one, just came into effect today. You know that Google acquired Youtube a while back. Since then, there has not been much of a change. Google video and Youtube pretty much remained the same. Well, starting today, you can type your search parameters in Google Video, and you'll get results of both Google Video and YouTube. This is really useful. Imagine...I have a friend who is obsessed with watching girls fight. Now it's easier for him too!

This is really cool. Is somewhat old, but a friend dropped by my house yesterday, and we started talking about it. I knew that I had it somewhere in my hard drive, so I looked it up and decided to post it here.

This is a flash movie which contains a few songs in English, but some parts sound as if they were spoken in Spanish. It's really funny how we missed them.

My all time favorite band in the whole world: Dream Theater

I've been a huge fan of Dream Theater since 1992, when a friend of mine from college showed me a few of their songs. Since then I've been obsessed with the band, buying all their albums, VHS's, DVD's, downloading bootlegs, learning about their history...the whole shebang.

I once flew to Orlando just to see them live together with Fates Warning (my second favorite band), and Queensryche.

Of course, I went to see them when they came to San Juan last year...an excellent show. I recently found in You Tube, videos of Dream Theater in Puerto Rico, and I thought that they might be of interest to some of you, so here they are.

I'm a music lover. When I was young, I used to play the bass guitar. I then switched to play keyboards. Later I settled for the guitar, which I have been playing for over 15 years...on and off. I've had one rock band - Bandidos back in the early 90's. I then, about 6 years ago created AJ Project with a friend of mine, now guitarist for Temple of Heads. With AJ Project we did a few really cool home recordings, but then life took over and we stopped playing together. I really enjoy playing the guitar, and I really wish I had more time to play.

On special occasions, I try to record something special for my wife. There are songs that at some point have been important to us, and I simply record my own version.

Now, for the first time ever, I make two of these songs available. The first one is "Allegretto by Bond". This one is pretty straight forward. I took the actual song, and simply recorded an electric guitar track on top. I'm very happy with this one.

The second, "Por tí me casaré, based on Ednita Nazario's version". This one was a lot tougher. I programmed all the drum and bass tracks using FruityLoops. Rhythm and lead guitar were recorded by me....I just didn't had time to record a solo.

Notice that I don't have expensive equipment...this is all recorded in my laptop computer...the same one I use for work.

Are technology and love compatible?

I have a friend that finds it very difficult to understand the benefits of technology. He is the kind of person that browses the internet, but when he needs to register, he doesn't because he doesn't know how to. He browses online stores, makes his picks, and then calls and order over the phone because he doesn't understands how online ordering works. He's a pretty intelligent dude, but he simply doesn't wants to learn. The funny thing is that this person is 27 years old.

He often tells me how technology has changed the world for the worst. He once mentioned the example of places like RAHOLA and CINE FOTO, places where you used to take your 35mm film rolls and get them developed. Most, if not all of these stores have closed down, because digital cameras have made traditional cameras obsolete. Printers allow you now to print your own photos at home, and if you want them professionally printed, just upload them to COSTCO.com and go and pick them up later.

I get into many arguments with him, because I make a living out of technology. I develop software to pretty much replace "brick and mortar" operations. I think that we need to constantly re-define ourselves to catch up with our environment, and technology is not an exception.

However, today I found a site that really scares me. This website allows you to automatically generate poem to your loved one. Simply go to the website, type in the name of your recepient, and optionally if you're going to use the poem along with a gift, and BOOM...you get your "base" poem, which you can then refine, changing the contents of different lines. Notice how the other lines adjust in order to keep the rhyme.

Here's one I wrote for myself.

I wrote this letter especially for you

Never shall I kiss someone else's lips

Serú Girán

About fifteen years ago, I was introduced to Latin Rock. Of all the bands that I was exposed to, there were two bands that really stood out. The first, Baron Rojo from Spain. A friend of mine gave me two original cassette tapes (which I still have in my car) of the albums "Volúmen Brutal" y "Tierra de Nadie". This last is my favorite, and its title song I learned to play on my guitar, when I myself used to have a rock band. I just found in You Tube an interview, and the presentation for the song "Pico de oro".

The other band is Serú Girán. This band was really amazing, and was dubbed "The Beatles of Latin America". The main architect of the band was the infamous Charly García, a musical genius if you ask me. Their music is kind of weird, with classical-sounding piano parts, and sometimes heavy guitars with dissonant melodies.

One of my favorite Serú Girán songs is named Seminaré (Original Version - Live Version). Almost at the end, the song says - "Si pudieras olvidar tu mente frente a mi, se que tu corazón diría que si". I've had lots of fun with that line...if you know what I mean ;).

Do you like Jay Leno's Headlines segment?

If you're like me, I really enjoy the Headlines segment of the Jay Leno show. I don't usually watch much tv. I watch Charmed on TBS on mornings on TBS while I drink coffee and get ready for work. All Monday nights I watch No Reservations with Anthony Bourdain on Travel Channel. I also like Modern Marvels on History Channel and a really cool program that I sometimes catch on Spike TV with a bunch of asians doing silly stuff. But that's about it. I usually devote no more than 10 hours per week to watch TV. Oh, I do watch TV on my computer via Google Video and You Tube, but I guess that doesn't count.

Richard Dawkins: Man of the year 2006

The BBC has elected Richard Dawkins as "Man of the year 2006". For those of you who don't know him, he is a professor of Public Understanding of Science at Oxford University.

Some of the reasons:

For being everywhere this year, with the publication of his global bestseller, The God Delusion.

For writing a book (The God Delusion) which enabled Terry Eagleton to write the most negative review ever published.

For thinking clearly in a world that doesn't much value clear thinking anymore.

For saying what he thinks.

For defending the delusion that science and religious faith are incompatible.

For creating the Richard Dawkins Foundation for Reason & Science.

For making people talk about the dangers of religious fundamentalism.

For lobbying atheism and humanism into the headlines more than anyone else has done before.

For being the face of science on television across the western world.

For not having been given an honour by the Queen, while being a recipient of the Medal of the Presidency of the Italian Republic and many scientific and literary prizes.

For raising questions that need to be answered by any intelligent religious believer wishing to develop a coherent worldview.

For being a scientific fundamentalist and the worst advert for atheism currently doing a book tour.

For raising a debate about the nature of "science" and how future generations of schoolchildren should be protected from "pseudo-science".

For being rude and getting away with it.

My suggestion to any open-minded person, is to at least watch Richard Dawkins' documentaries "The root of all evil?" and "The virus of faith". If you feel inclined to keep on evaluating his view points, go ahead and grab a copy of "The God Delusion".

If you like these documentaries, pass them along to people you really love.

Hello y'all. This is my first posting of this year 2007.

This is not really news. A friend of mine was telling me about this yesterday. I had seen it over a year ago, but couldn't remember the web site's address. After searching a little, I found it, and decided to post it here. Hopefully I won't forget to look here the next time I'm searching for it.

Evolution

Though not an expert in the topic, I believe in the theory of the evolution of species through natural selection. This past week I came across two news items that talk about two different instances of "evolution at work".

The first, a group of lions in an island that evolved into a new "sort of" breed of lions that can swim and became strong enough to tackle their natural predator on the island, the giant buffalo.

The second one, in Africa, a group of people that have developed the ability of digesting milk in adulthood.

Both very interesting stories.

What do I mean by appliance?

People have asked me this question...I thought it was completely clear, now I know it's not, so I'll explain.

An appliance, is like a TV set, a DVD player, an MP3 player, a microwave oven etc. It's a piece of hardware, designed for a specific purpose.

Let's take for instance Tivo, one of the leaders in tv on demand. In short, Tivo is a cute box (or appliance) that you connect to your TV set, subscribe to their service, and you have TV on demand, DVR, listings, and many other features.

These appliances start out as an idea, then software, and then packaging. The idea is clear in Tivo's case. For software, they use Linux and then, their cute black box with pretty logo. So, they have a piece of software, running in a widely used operating system, inside a marketing-friendly box. That's what I mean by an appliance.

To put it in more simplistic terms, let's explore the building blocks of an appliance such as Tivo.

Exhibit A: Myth TV

Myth TV is a software solution, that "wraps" the necessary functionalities to use your computer as a "media center". With Myth TV you can have tv shows, music, photos, watch dvd's, rip dvd's, download torrents, etc. Myth TV is freely available, and you can download it and use it yourself.

Now, let's add some business sense to the equation. We say "Neat, this is a great product, but the user needs to install Linux on his/her computer...that's not gonna happen...unless, we can find a way to help them with the task". If we can find a cost effective way of putting together a computer with all the software (Linux and Myth TV) pre-installed, people may be willing to buy it....after all, that's what Tivo is doing...they just don't tell you that they run Linux because that's a "need to know"...and users don't need to know.

Great, let's look for a packaging for our product. MicroATX motherboards are the smallest I know of that can run Intel/AMD processors, so we look around to see what we find, and we find this:

This case is excellent for our purpose, since it even has card readers, so we can feed memory cards directly from digital cameras into the "media center".

We make some custom modifications to the software...to make it more appealing..and to make it ours...branding if you will, and the end result, a packaged product... An Appliance, named Hannibal.

So we can also make a Mac OS appliance...

Today I read an article detailing the necessary steps to boot Mac OSX from a USB Pendrive (Boot MacOS X from USB pendrive). Just in like my previous posts, where I use Linux, in this case we can have Mac OS X. I think this is pretty cool, at least for me that I legally own a Mac. It's also interesting, since it demonstrates that the operating system itself is very thin, and the rest of the disk usage is for additional features and options, which are not essential.

I'm yet to see a way of running Windows XP from an USB pendrive, but something tells me that it will never happen.

Creating a Linux appliance - 2

Ok. I installed PCLinuxOS (pclinuxos.com). I followed the steps located at Pendrivelinux.com. This distro is much more elaborated than DamnSmallLinux...lots of eye candy. It has many GUI features for configuration and administration. It detected all my hardware, and though it shows me all the wireless networks available, I have not been able to connect to any yet.

It even has a feature, via GUI, to make what is called a "Persistent Home". This is, to have a space on the USB to store all the things you do while using the system. You know, you're booting from an USB drive, which uses RAM drives to decompress the OS and use it. Everything's done in 'short term' memory, so when you shut down, you loose changes. Well, with this, you have your own storage space, which is available every time you boot. The step-by-step guide is here.

I have to say that I really like this one.

Creating a Linux appliance

I'm obsessed with the fact that Linux is an operating system that can run almost anywhere. I have different projects, which may benefit from this feature.

I recently found out, that there are Linux distributions that can even boot up from an USB drive. I did know that there where LiveCD's, which are distributions that you can boot up directly from a CD, without having to install a single program on your computer, but using an USB drive has even more possibilities...for instance, you can save preferences...you can't do that on a CD.

Anyhow, I'm doing an experiment with a distribution called "Damn Small Linux", or DSL (damnsmalllinux.org). I bought a 2GB USB drive for $32, and follow the instructions on http://pendrivelinux.com/2006/03/25/putting-damn-small-linux-dsl-on-usb/.

I have it running, and I'm very impressed....I mean, it's like having a computer inside an USB drive. For instance, I can have a computer without hard drive and CDRom, and can still boot from my USB, browse the Internet, read email, use OpenOffice, etc.

I'm still trying to configure my Wireless card. I'm also thinking on trying out PCLinuxOS, another small distribution, which looks sexier.

A cool new Firefox 2 feature I found

You know that you can go to Google and type a math operation and get the results, right? Well check this out. Go to your Firefox's Google box, and type a math operation there..say 14.99 * .07, and you'll instantly see the results as a Google suggestion, in this example, the 7% Puerto Rico sales tax for a pizza from Domino's.

I know, the calculator is a Google feature, but notice how nicely and seamlessly it gets integrated into the browser.

Anyhow, I think it's cool.

Which antivirus software to use

I'm writing this entry from Borders at Plaza las Americas, San Juan Puerto Rico. Iwas looking at technology books, and I started listening to the conversation between two gentlemen beside me. The were debating about which antivirus software is better. They related stories about Symantec, then Norton, Avast, Panda. I really wanted to jump in...I had something to ask them.

First off, this is gonna sound like some fan boy shit, but trust me, it´s not about that. I wanted to ask them, what´s the origin of the viruses they´re so afraid of. Do they come from infected floppy disks? Don´t think so. Infected files on CDs or DVDs? Maybe. Or, perhaps malware and spyware from emails and websites. Most likely!

Now, the mandatory question: which browser and email software are you using?

Got to go now, but more on this later.

It's all about standards. Why don't people get it?

Today, I was listening to LifeOnline, a Podcast hosted by GoDaddy's CEO Bob Parsons, and they mentioned a site called GoodFortunes.com. This site sells fortune cookies, which you can order, and supposedly, you can specify the messages you want inside of them. Many wicked ideas came to mind, so I decided to give it a look.

As soon as I type the URL and hit "enter", I was welcomed by the most offensive message box I've seen. The message read: "You are not using Internet Explorer Please call 1-800-644-9474 between 8:30 - 5:00 PST to place an order."

Why don't people get it already? When will this whole browser wars end? Why don't people just develop websites following open standards, thus making sure that it runs on ANY browser? Why use features that are proprietary to Internet Explorer, or any other browser for that matter? What is it in IE so special that it's not available in any other browser? Is Microsoft giving you anything back...money, publicity?

Those, and many other questions come to mind every time I browse into a website that explicitly says that it is "best viewed in Internet Explorer". There's even a website I once saw that said: "This site is optimized for Internet Explorer, the internet standard".

COME ON!!!

Well, fear not, because there's "The Best of Google Video Project". Just sit back and relax, because these people have taken the time to select only those videos that are worth your time. There are quite a few, so go home, get a beer, a cup of tea, wine, or open a small packet of Crystal Light and pour it into a bottle of water....whatever, because the show is about to start.

Escaping from a straitjacket

My best friend is Puerto Rico magician Reynold Alexander. Next month, he will attempt to break the Guinness World Record of escaping from a straitjacket, while hanging from his feet 20 feet above the ground. Today I went to one of his rehearsals, and damn that's hard. The escape itself he can do it rather fast, but he's hanging from his feet! Oh, did I mentioned that the rope will be burning? He's going to the gym every day....perhaps I should do the same.

Digg is a social bookmarking website that I'm addicted to. Late yesterday, I posted a story on Digg and it made it to the home page! That's quite an accomplishment, taking into consideration that the story is promoted by the users, so the amount of votes (or diggs), plus the amount of time between Diggs decide how prominent the story will be.

Why you ask? Well, I have lots of opinions...pretty much about everything, and what other better of releasing all my internal presure? I also live a very cool life...no complaints. Here I can (and will) write about the things I do. I live in Puerto Rico (small island in the caribbean), and there's a lot to do around here.
